Lisa gave an interesting talk on alternative funding methods for business investment. Crowd funding was one example of raising money by soliciting small gifts from a wide number of people. Judge Russ West and Aric Johnson. Mt. McKinley Climb, Alaska Host: Rotarian James Gorham

Russ details the three-week trek up Mt. McKinley (Denali) in Alaska. The five climbers trained to scale the highest mountain in North America as it is a dangerous and strenuous journey. The 30 plus miles and 13,000 plus elevation gain featured deep and sometimes hidden crevasses, icy ridges, steep rope ascents, high winds, sub zero temperatures, and oxygen deprivation. Those braving this were classified somewhere between heroic and crazy.

April 15 *** DFY Program At the LGMS *** We ate lunch at the middle school and heard about the program after lunch.

Seven students gave reports on the program.
About 300 La Grande Middle School students participate in DFY. The program requires that students sign an agreement that they will be drug-free for the time they participate and also agree to random urinalysis to verify their status. The students in the club are invited to participate in special activities such as ski trips, bowling, skating, water parks, and pizza nights. These social events help develop relationships between students who pledge not to use drugs. Periodic club meetings provide students information about the issues associated with drug use.

Susan presenting international program that the Wallowa club has been doing in El Salvador for some years.

Using a District matching grant the Wallowa club raised $4000 to support young women in El Salvador with education scholarships. This money allows the girls above to go to school. Without the grants these girls would be working or helping the family at home. This program gives young women opportunities for higher education and professional careers that would have been impossible otherwise.

Title: Fundraising Efforts for the Friday Backpack Program, Host: Eric Laurence
Dennis shows a concept drawing of the next car sculpture project that transcends the example he displayed at Rotary. The table-length race car sculpture shown was carved from wood and stained to give one a perception of speed. The sculpture was purchased by an enthusiast for $150,000.
Dennis plans a fund raising event in La Grande this summer where he will display his work and paint a new project. The overspray will be colorful and worthy of farming. These signed pieces will be sold and the money raised will support the Backpack Program.

La Grande Rotary says goodbye to President Sean Williams. Sean is relocating to Hermiston. The club’s board sends Sean off with a thank you and a sombrero to commemorate his work toward the Enchilada Fund raiser and his spirit of service beyond self.

Richard Szymanski, Council Scout Executive, Blue Mountain Council of the Boy Scouts of America tell two “Charlie” stories about how scouting impacts the lives of young people.
He also told the story of the origins of scouting and Robert Baden-Powel’s part in the defense of Mafeking in the Boer War–fascinating and worth reading about.

La Grande Rotarians met today as super committees for the inaugural effort to move forward on the aims of the club. Each committee (Foundation, Youth Service, Communication, Service Projects, and Membership). Each committee developed a calendar of activity, and a set activities for the next several months.
The Service Projects Committee develops ideas for small community projects.

Charolette and Gary Brockaway, La Grande Rotary members, delivered a travel log of Washington DC during the federal shutdown. Instead of monuments and museums, the club was entertained to a tour of Amish country, Baltimore and Fort McHenry, and the outside of several DC sites!

Tom Insko provided an overview of Boise Cascade operations with special emphasis on the changes in forest products and the future of the timber industry in Oregon.

The club previewed the Website and had a general discussion about the uses and abuses of electronic communication.

Andi and Michael led the discussion and collected feedback orally and through survey results. The aim of this activity was to determine the most efficient way of communicating with Rotarians to forward the business of Rotary and how to provide the public with information about the club.
December 14
Holiday Program at the Maredel Center. Great food provided by Marlene O’Rourke–three salads, vegetables, potato, savory beef, and lots of desert choices.

A terrific choir presentation by La Grande High School capped off the excellent meal.
